Assaults Still Troubling 112 Precinct

Three hundred percent increase over last year's total so far.

The second week of February saw some crime relief in the 112 Precinct, according to the most recent crime numbers from COMPSTAT.

While the most prevalent crime was grand larceny once again, with 11 recorded, the precinct also saw three robberies, one reported rape and two incidents of burglary.

The rape was the first incident reported this year, after 2011 saw a large increase.

The total number of grand larcenies is down overall this year, and compared to the same week in 2011, the tally was flat. Nevertheless, over the last four weeks, there has been a 20 percent increase in grand larcenies overall in the area.

A grand larceny is property theft of potential value over $1,000. Stealing a wallet with a credit card inside, for example, counts as a grand larceny.

While there were just 18 major crimes committed during the week, there was a large increase in petit larcenies recorded earlier this month, as well. 21 Were committed in a seven-day period, compared to just nine during the same time last year.

Overall, the most eye-popping increase in crime so far in the 112 Precinct remains felony assaults. Through the middle of February in 2011, just three had been reported in Rego Park and Forest Hills. This year, the number is four times that many. Ten of which were recorded in the last four weeks.

For the rest of the year, major crimes — other than assaults — have remained roughly static or ticked downward slightly, including burglaries, which are down more than 30 percent compared to last year.
