Medical Examiner Confirms Remains Found in Queens Match Avonte Oquendo

Cause of autistic teen's death has not yet been determined.

The city medical examiner’s office has confirmed that remains washed ashore last week in Queens matched Avonte Oquendo, an autistic Rego Park teenager who had been missing since October.

Last Thursday, police discovered an arm and leg as well as pants and a pair of Air Jordan sneakers, both of which were the same size and brand that Oquendo was seen wearing before he went missing three months ago, in College Point.

The youth, who could not communicate verbally, was last seen leaving Long Island City’s Riverview School on Oct. 4.

The medical examiner’s office confirmed that the remains found in College Point were Oquendo, but still had not determined a cause of death.

The teen’s family has filed a notice of claim against the city on the grounds that Oquendo was not properly supervised at his school.
