Forest Hills Gets Eight Inches of Snow, Guv Declares Emergency

State of emergency declared for Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx.

Official snow totals Wednesday morning show more than eight inches on the ground in Forest Hills following a winter storm that prompted Gov. Andrew Cuomo to declare a state of emergency.

Cuomo called the state of emergency for Queens, Kings, New York, Bronx, Suffolk, Nassau, Richmond, Westchester and Rockland counties and said he activated plows, front loaders and operators in addition to dozens of private contractors ready to pitch in with the clean up.

“This winter storm will bring a one-two punch of snow and extreme cold. I urge all those in the affected regions to exercise caution, and avoid travel if possible,” Cuomo said. “State resources are deployed to clear snow and help those impacted by the storm, but above all it is important that New Yorkers remain safe both during and after the storm.”

Unlike the Jan. 2 blizzard, Cuomo chose not to close the Long Island Expressway on Tuesday. Meanwhile, commuters across the region reported spending 2-4 hours on gridlocked, icy roadways, as traffic crawled during the evening commute.

Here are the complete snow totals for Queens.

Forest Hills: 8.6 inches
Bayside: 10.6 inches
Oakland Gardens: 9 inches
Fresh Meadows: 10.5 inches
Middle Village: 10.3 inches
Astoria: 9.4 inches
LaGuardia Airport: 8.1 inches
JFK Airport: 7.1 inches
