Taking To The Streets To Fight Breast Cancer

Forest Hills is home to 17th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

More than 9,000 people took to Queens Boulevard and marched through Forest Hills on Oct. 17, all in the interest of raising money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer.

In a borough in which 1,400 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, a little windy weather in the morning was not about to stop one of the largest crowds in the history of the event.

This year, more than $810,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society.

The walk, which has become a tradition for the borough, shut down the service road access to Queens Boulevard for much of the day. While some walkers didn't feel the five mile course wasn't long enough, the event was still a huge success.

"It really brings out a wide group of breast cancer survivors and their familes," said event coordinator John Link. "This is really focused on men and women and the families who are affected."
