West Side Tennis Club to Host New York Open

New citywide event will honor club's 100th Anniversary July 4.

Forest Hills' West Side Tennis Club will play host to a new citywide tournament on July 4 this year, helping to usher in the organization's 100th anniversary.

The New York Open, which organizers are hoping will become an annual tournament, will feature competitive action in singles, doubles and mixed doubles with athletes from around the city.

"The West Side Tennis Club — where the US Open was created, and which celebrates its100th anniversary at Forest Hills this year — is the perfect venue for this championship," said Sandy DeShong, director of Tennis in New York, the tournament organizer. "It provides a beautiful and intimate place to watch the best tennis in New York City this summer."

The tournament's details are still being worked out, though organizers plan to make futher announcements in March.

The West Side Tennis Club frequently holds summer events on its grass courts. One Forest Hills Patch writer participated in a tournament there in 2011, chronicling his experience here.
