USTA to Construct Retractable Roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium

Upgrade would be part of $500 million renovation at Billie Jean King Tennis Center.

The United Tennis Association is expected to announce today that it will build a retractable roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

The stadium’s upgrade is part of a $500 million renovation project at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center that was approved by the City Council in July.

The roof was planned for construction after the finals at the U.S. Open were rained out during the past few years, NY 1 reported.

Previously, the USTA had said the construction of a roof was unlikely because the arena could not handle additional weight since it was built on a landfill.

The expansion for the tennis center also includes tearing down the old Grandstand Stadium and reconstructing it on another spot in the U.S. Open complex as well as an upgrade for the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Construction is expected to take eight years and will be completed between tournaments at the tennis center.
