Rivera Makes First and Last Pitch in Mets Walk-Off Win

The New York Mets came both to bury and praise Mariano Rivera, apparently, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat at Citi Field Tuesday night.

Losing 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Mets collected back-to-back-to-back hits, scoring two runs on just nine pitches and sending the Yankees and their fans back to the Bronx in stunned disbelief.

It was the vaunted closer's first blown save and loss this season.

Rivera was honored during pre-game festivities at Citi Field, hailed as the greatest closer of all time and the last player to ever wear the now-retired number 42.

After allowing the Yankees' great to throw out the first pitch, the Mets stopped being kind to him and started swinging the lumber.

The four-game series — in which the Mets are now 2-0 — moves to the Bronx for Wednesday night and Thursday. It is the only time the Mets and Yankees will meet this year.

Wednesday night's game will feature Yankees starter David Phelps (3-2) going against Mets starter Jeremy Hefner (0-5). The game starts at 7:05 p.m. in Yankee Stadium.
