New York City Soccer Team to Debut in 2015: Report

Team could use Yankee Stadium for games until site in Flushing Meadows Corona Park is constructed.

The New York City Football Club will literally kick off its first season in 2015, NY 1 reported.

The team will be owned by a group that runs British football club Manchester City and the Yankees will hold a minority stake.

Eventually, the owners plan to build a stadium in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, but Yankee Stadium could possibly be an interim site for games.

“Major League Soccer is one of the fastest growing leagues in the world and I do believe great things are going to happen here and this team is going to be a great thing for New York City,” said Hal Steinbrenner, managing general partner for the Yankees, told NY 1.

The New York City Football Club has named Claudio Reyna as its director. He will be responsible for recruiting players, coaches and trainers.
