It's Been a While Since the Mets Last Won a Subway Series

The New York Mets put it to the New York Yankees for real Thursday night, winning 3-1 in the Bronx and sweeping a season series against the Bombers for the first time ever.

Winning Mets starter Dillon Gee struck out 12 Yankees on their home turf as part of a dominant performance that helped seal the win.

Mets right fielder Marlon Byrd homered with a man on base in the second inning, giving the team a lead they would never relinquish.

It was the first time since June 2008 that the Mets won a series against their cross-town rivals.

Here are some vital stats on the last time the Mets won this series:

  • Total time elapsed: four years, 11 months and three days, or more than 155 million seconds.
  • President at the time was George W. Bush.
  • WALL-E, the Pixar movie about a lovable, industrious robot had just come out in theaters.
  • The Wire had finished its last season three months earlier.
  • George Carlin had just died.
It's been a really long time, is what I'm saying.
