Forest Hills High School Girls Volleyball Earns Division Title

Rangers finish 11-1 with victory against Flushing Monday night.

The Forest Hills High School girls volleyball team finished out a fantastic season on a high note Monday night, toppling Flushing two games to none to secure an 11-1 record on the year.

With a victory against Flushing, the Rangers have to play the waiting game for the next two days while their opponent in their first round playoff game is decided.

Hero: Tatiana Moore, a league leader in kills this season with 111 entering the match, set the tone. While the Rangers front line played with a great deal of intensity, and there were several outstanding efforts in the last game of the season, Moore stood out — as she has all season — and helped steer her team to victory.

Turning Point: Early in the first game, the Red Devils seemed to be taking advantage of some communication problems the Rangers were having, jumping out to an early lead.

With Flushing leading 5-4, Moore made a pair of acrobatic plays at the net to secure a kill — including a one-handed finishing smash — that seemed to stun Flushing High School's front line. Forest Hills tied the game at 5 and went on to take a commanding lead that the Red Devils never recovered from.

The Quote: "We made mistakes, and they had some good points, but we won because we stuck together," Head Coach Gisele Ruiz said. "I was a little worried coming in, but once we played the first few sets I thought, 'okay, we've got it.'" Ruiz was concerned after some questionable tournament play by the Rangers over the weekend. Once Forest Hills took an early lead, however, those worries melted away.

Bottom Line: The Rangers got a chance to celebrate in their last game of the season, despite a couple of hiccups during the match. With this 2-0 match win, Forest Hills total number of games lost all season is only three, including a pair of nailbiters to Van Buren in their only match loss of the season. With a little luck, the Rangers could go deep into the PSAL playoffs, which start on Friday.

Key Stat: 1 Loss. This entire season, the Rangers have only dropped one match, in a trap game against Martin Van Buren High School earlier in the year.

Who's Next? We'll find out on Wednesday. With the regular season over, the Rangers are awaiting seeding for what's likely to be a home playoff game on Friday afternoon.
