Forest Hills' Harkless Picked By 76ers

Former high school standout went pro after one season at St. John's.

Former Forest Hills basketball phenom Maurice Harkless, who played one season of college basketball at St. John's University in Queens, was selected in the first round of the NBA Draft Thursday night by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Harkless played at before transferring his senior year to South Kent in Connecticut. 

The 19-year-old, who stands at 6-foot-8, averaged 15.5 points per game in his freshman season, earning the Big East's Rookie of the Year honors.

He started all 32 games in his only season with the Red Storm and posted seven 20-point games.

"I'm really thankful for this opportunity, and thankful to the Philadephia organization for drafting me," Harkless said in an interview on NBA.com. "I'm going to work really hard and try and help the team out any way that I can."
