Bayside High School Tops Forest Hills High, 57-50

Playoff win sends Commodores to Borough Final against Cardozo.

The Bayside High School boys basketball team got a measure of vengeance Thursday night on the road at Forest Hills High School. When the dust settled at the end of the night, Bayside had beaten Forest Hills, 57-50.

that bumped the Commodores down to third place in the borough for the playoffs, Bayside went on the road and outplayed their cross-borough rivals, taking home a win in a close-fought contest.

Hero: Sophomore Point Guard Cantrell Barker had ice water in his veins in the fourth quarter, sinking four out of four foul shots with under three minutes to play to help his team secure the victory.

Turning Point: With less than three minutes to go and the score tied at 49, Bayside took the momentum and the lead for good on back to back possessions, burying a long-range jumper and finished with an alley-oop layup to put the final nail in the Rangers’ coffin.

Quotable: “We didn’t shoot well at all,” head coach Ben Chobhaphand said. “We usually hit those shots. Very disappointing. Some shots didn’t go down, we made some bad decisions down the stretch, shooting free throws was difficult too.”

Chobhaphand said that after a tough loss, he was going to work hard to get his team’s mind focused on the city playoffs later this month.

Bottom Line: After taking home a big win to secure a 2-seed in the playoffs last Thursday, the Rangers couldn’t repeat their performance. They took too many long-range shots without any payoff and they shot just 53 percent from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, Bayside’s quick-as-lightning offense managed to break the press more often than not, and capitalize on free throw chances.

Key Stat: The Rangers fired off a lot of low-percentage shots during the game, but only made the first two. At the end of the night, Forest Hills went a combined 2-for-16 from beyond the arc. After beating Jamaica with the inside game on Tuesday night, it seemed like a strange reversal of strategy for the otherwise hot Rangers.
