The last thing most New York City students want to think about at this point is the upcoming school year, but parents may want to check out this list of important dates.

The city’s Department of Education has released its calendar for the 2013-14 school year. Below, Patch has listed some of the highlights.

Aug. 1: Summer school ends for elementary students.

Aug. 12: Summer school ends for high school students.

Sept. 2: Schools closed for Labor Day.

Sept. 5 and 6: Schools closed for Rosh Hashanah.

Sept. 9: First day of school.

Sept. 11: First full day for pre-kindergarten students.

Oct. 14: Schools closed for Columbus Day.

Nov. 11: Schools closed for Veterans Day.

Nov. 28 and 29: Schools closed for Thanksgiving break.

Dec. 23 to Jan. 1: Schools closed for winter recess.

Jan. 2: School resumes following winter recess.

Jan. 20: Schools closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Jan. 31: Fall term ends for high school students.

Feb. 3: Spring term begins for high school students.

Feb. 17 to 21: Schools closed for mid-winter recess.

Feb. 24: School resumes after mid-winter recess.

March 14 to 22: Schools closed for spring break.

March 23: School resumes following spring break.

May 26: Schools closed for Memorial Day.

June 26: Final day of school for the year.
