Area school outperforms 68 percent of city high schools.

The reports award letter grades to schools based on student progress toward graduation, performance on standardized tests and coursework and student attendance as well as surveys of parents, students and teachers about their schools.

Forest Hills High School received "B" grades in the student performance, student progress and school environment categories, and an "A" grade in the college and career readiness category.

Queens Metropolitan High School, which first opened in 2010, has yet to graduate a class, and therefore is not yet subject to letter grades.

“Our high schools play an important role in student outcomes beyond K-12,” Walcott said. “By measuring how well our schools prepare students for college and careers, the progress reports shine a light on the importance of increased rigor as a bridge to future success.”

Each school's "peer group" index, which can be found in each individual report, should also be taken into consideration when looking at a school's grade. A peer group is a group of schools with similar student populations that are determined based on a comparison of student performance on ELA and Math test scores as well as special education status and age upon entry in high school that serve approximately the same grade levels.
