12th Annual Sholem Aleichem Day

KLEZMER MUSIC:  From Old World to New World to Our World.

This spring’s Sholem Aleichem Day, our annual celebration of Yiddish culture, will focus on the music of klezmorim, the Jewish folk instrumentalists of Eastern and Central Europe.  Klezmer music immigrated to this country, along with the musicians, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and has continued to evolve here, enlarged with a Yiddish song repertoire and influenced by folk and jazz, right down to today’s vibrant klezmer revival.  Robert Cohen has produced and hosted over 100 radio programs on Jewish music, including National Public Radio's One People, Many Voices.  He has taught at the New England Conservatory of Music, and the New School, where he created courses on Jewish and American folk music.

This program, which is free and open to the public, is made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities’ Speakers in the Humanities program.
