DOE Rates Forest Hills Schools in Annual Progress Report

Three Forest Hills schools receive an 'A,' while two others and a Rego Park site get a 'B.'

The city’s Department of Education has released its annual report card and progress reports on schools across the five boroughs, giving three of Forest Hills’ schools an ‘A’ grade and three others a ‘B.’

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott released the seventh annual progress reports for more than 1,600 citywide elementary, middle and high school schools on Wednesday.

The report awarded letter grades based on student progress as well as a progress score percentage for each school.

On the school's website, Principal Saul Gootnick said the high school was the only nonspecialized one in the five boroughs to receive an 'A' five years in a row.

P.S. 196 also received an ‘A’ as well as a 65 percent progress score, while P.S. 101 was given an ‘A’ and a 37.8 progress score.

P.S. 144 got a ‘B’ grade and a 55.4 percent progress score, while P.S. 220 received a ‘B’ and a 57.1 progress score.

Rego Park’s J.H.S. 157 was given a ‘B’ and a 66.2 percent progress score.

The report graded each school based on progress, performance and attendance as well as surveys of parents, students and teachers.

The high school progress report also measured the extent to which schools are preparing their students for college and the workforce.

This year’s high school reports found that more students are graduating from high school ready for college and careers and that more students are enrolling in higher education.

“The most important job of our schools is ensuring students are on track to succeed in college and their careers,” Walcott said. “These results are further evidence that the hard work of our teachers and principals is paying off.”
