Bayside Boys Bowling Beats Forest Hills, 3-0

Rangers drop third place in division to cross-borough rivals.

With two wins against Bayside this year, Forest Hills was confident going into Wednesday's contest that they would be able to sweep the Commodores on the season.

After just a few frames at Whitestone Lanes, it was clear that wasn't going to happen, as Forest Hills (6-5) fell to Bayside (7-4), 3-0.

In the battle for third place in the division, the Rangers looked a little lost on the lanes.

Hero: The Berglund brothers. Justin and Ryan Berglund, both bowling for Bayside's A-squad, put on a clinic in their game and combined for more than 10 strikes. Anchoring Bayside's first team, their efforts pushed the Commodores over the top early and kept them ahead from the outset.

Quotable: "We generally don't bowl well at these lanes, not that that's an excuse," said Forest Hills coach Ira Wollen. "We've beaten Bayside twice this year, and both were come-from-behind wins. [We've] shown a lot of heart. We don't give up."

Wollen said he still had high hopes for his team to make the playoffs, saying they needed to just win two of their remaining four games to seal a spot in the postseason.

Turning Point: In the A game, Bayside's top performers put together two separate strings of eight and 11 consecutive closed frames, including four strikes in a row. The Rangers hung in early, but after the barrage of clean slates that came from Bayside in the A game, there was little doubt who the winner would be.

Bottom Line: The Rangers looked outmatched Wednesday, struggling to clean up spares and generally seeming sluggish on the floor. Once Bayside stepped on the gas, both the A and B teams seemed to pull away and put plenty of distance between themselves and Forest Hills.

Key Stat: 444, the combined score of the Berglund brothers — perhaps more accurately called the Bash Brothers — after their virtuoso performances. The 233 marked Justin's season high and brought his average to a strong 176 on the season.
