Weprin To Washington: Think of the Seniors

Weprin urges action on debt ceiling, end to political posturing to prevent those collecting Social Security from suffering.

Assemblyman David Weprin, D-Little Neck, stood in front of Rego Park's Social Security offices Sunday morning to urge Congress to think of the nation's seniors as they contemplate a deal to avoid default.

Weprin, who is running for Congress in a special election to be held Sept. 13, said that a failure to raise the debt ceiling soon could mean that seniors on fixed incomes would be forced to do without the government entitlements that allow them to shop for groceries and pay their bills.

"Coming to an agreement on the debt ceiling is vital for many reasons, but for Queens seniors, it is an imperative that the devt ceiling impasse not interfere with the timely distribution of Social security checks," Weprin said. "Seniors should not become the innocent victims of the Republicans' irresponsible, partisan games and their failure to negotiate in good faith."
