Weprin Gets Two Big New York Nods In Congressional Race

The last 48 hours have been busy for Assemblyman David Weprin, D-Little Neck, and his campaign for Congress. He’s collected not one, but two major endorsements from state and federal party figures.

On Tuesday, Weprin’s campaign announced that he had the full support of New York’s Senior senator, Charles Schumer.

Then on Wednesday, State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli stepped up to the plate to endorse the former Wall Streeter and city councilman.

“It is vital we preserve Medicare and Social Security, and the only candidate for Congress who will do that is David Weprin,” Schumer said. “David Weprin is someone we can count on to stand up for middle class Brooklyn and Queens families.”

Schumer went a step further, calling out the Republican party for “extreme right-wing” policies, and saying the party was endangering vital services in an attempt to protect Big Oil.

DiNapoli, for his part, said he believed Weprin had the right experience to be the next congressman for the ninth district.

“With our nation facing some of the greatest fiscal challenges in a generation, we need David Weprin’s financial and budgeting experience in Congress,” DiNapoli said in a statement. “I know David Weprin and I trust David Weprin. He is ready to make the tough decisions it will take to keep our fiscal house in order while protecting critical programs like Medicare.”

Republican Bob Turner’s campaign, scoffed at the endorsements in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.

“Career politician Tom DiNapoli says we need career politician David Weprin's 'financial and budgeting experience' in Washington. Exactly what experience is he referring to - career politician Weprin's Slush Fund Scandal in the City Council that he purports to know nothing about?” said Turner campaign staffer William O’Reilly. “The last thing — the absolute last thing — New York needs is another career politician in Congress."

The election in the Ninth Congressional District will take place on Sept. 13.
