Weprin Decries Federal 'Cut, Cap And Balance' Bill

Bill passed the House of Representatives Tuesday night in a party-line vote.

Assemblyman David Weprin, D-Little Neck, candidate for Congress, came out strongly against the House of Representatives’ “Cut, cap and balance,” plan that worked its way through the house yesterday.

Calling the plan “radical,” Weprin said it was too aggressive in its approach to getting government spending under control.

“Everyone agress that we must tighten our belts and stop spending as much, but the Republican plan would attempt to reduce the deficit on the backs of seniors, the middle class, and families on Medicaid,” Weprin said, adding he would have voted against the plan, “while protecting tax subsidies for Big Oil and tax breaks for companies that ship American jobs overseas.”

The plan, which could eventually become part of a debt-ceiling deal, passed the House Tuesday night in a party-line vote, 234 to 190.

One element of the plan, a balanced budget amendment, would require a two-thirds vote of the House to pass.

Weprin has admitted that he thinks government spending has grown out of control, but also said that it is the duty of those in government to protect the entitlements of seniors and aid for the middle class.

In the release, Weprin, who worked on Wall Street before his time as a public servant, said he believed the Republican-sponsored plan would hamper economic growth and harm working families.
