Weiner Says Internet Killed His Mayoral Candidacy

Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner says that his mayoral candidacy may not have been derailed had the Internet not existed, according to a profile in GQ Magazine.

Weiner, who was previously the congressman for Forest Hills, briefly led the mayoral polls last summer before a revelation surfaced that he had engaged in an online relationship with a young woman following his resignation from Congress due to a sexting scandal the previous year.

In the article “The Year of Living Carlos Dangerously,” which references the online alias Weiner used, the former congressman said the Internet ruined his chance of being elected mayor.

“Maybe if the Internet didn’t exist?” he said in the article. “Like, if I was running in 1955? I’d probably get elected mayor.”

He also said that he loved his wife, Huma Abedin, and would never pick up another woman.

In September’s Democratic primary, Weiner only took in five percent of the vote.
