Weiner Could Face House Ethics Committee Investigation

Pelosi advocates for investigation into whether congressman used government resources in illicit communications.

U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner could face an investigation by the House Ethics Committee now that he has confessed to a series of inappropriate online relationships.

In a statement Monday evening, House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Weiner should face an investigation into his actions.

"I am deeply disappointed and saddened about this situation; for Anthony's wife, Huma, his family, his staff and his constituents,” Pelosi said. "I am calling for an Ethics Committee investigation to determine whether any official resources were used or any other violation of House rules occurred."

Weiner, after admitting to taking a series of lewd photos and sending them to half a dozen women, said he would cooperate with any investigation.

“I welcome and will fully cooperate with an investigation by the House Ethics Committee,” Weiner said in a statement on Monday evening. “I am deeply sorry to my family, staff and constituents.”

Weiner denied using any Congressional resources to carry out his liaisons with various women online, but admitted that he had not closely kept track of which computers he used when sending messages via Twitter and Facebook.

“I don’t have knowledge of every last communication, but I don’t believe I used any government resource,” he said. He also added that he didn’t believe his actions had violated his oath of office and should not end in expulsion from the House or resignation.
