Turner's School Tax Break Looks Familiar: Lancman

Assemblyman touts state law he co-sponsored last year for private school funds.

Assemblyman Rory Lancman, thinks the Republican’s bill looks pretty familiar.

The bill Turner touted on Friday, Lancman said, is a watered-down version of a similar bill that Lancman co-sponsored in the state Assembly starting in February of last year.

“I welcome Mr. Turner to the cause of making religious education affordable for New York children and their families — the bill he introduced at the federal level is a more modest version of legislation I'm co-sponsoring at the state level,” Lancman said. “As a parent of three children who have attended religious schools, I know first-hand the financial burden it imposes.”

Lancman’s bill would provide tax credits of up to $6,000 for individuals and $15,000 for businesses who make charitable contributions to organizations that provide private school tuition assistance.

It is currently in the Assembly Ways and Means Committee.

The point of the bill, Lancman said, would be to encourage residents and businesses to help fund parochial schools without broadening the tax base.
