The GOP’s Latest Plan for Budget Busting: Should Queens Get Behind it?

Paul Ryan has released his new plan for reducing the budget deficit. But does it work for Queens?

House GOP leaders on Tuesday released a new plan for decreasing the national deficit by lowering tax rates and calling for cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, food stamps, Pell Grants and a long list of other programs that President Barack Obama has promised to protect.

The plan, announced by House Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis. and co-authored by Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, takes aim at what conservative Republicans deem a wasteful health care system. Ryan says the plan will reform Medicare and keep it from going bankrupt, while also helping seniors by lowering cost increases and giving them more options.

However, Democrats in the Senate say the plan has no chance of passing, because it falls far short of helping seniors in any real way and stands in sharp contrast to Obama’s plan released last month, which saved any cuts to benefit programs such as Medicare.

Still, Ryan denies any claims that the GOP’s plan will threaten benefits to seniors in or near retirement and says Americans are ready for real deficit-reduction solutions, which his plan achieves.

"If you want to save Medicare and keep it from going bankrupt, you must reform the program, and that's what we intend to do,” he said. "We want to take all the empty promises our government is making and make sure they're not broken promises."

How do you feel about the GOP's deficit-reduction plan and, more importantly, how will it impact the most financially stressed communities, like those in Queens?

You see if you cut medicaid and medicare How in the world will the poor and old afford any health care they can't and there is no jobs really out there right now especially in queens and health care costs are going up and up. It seems like the government wants to get rid of medicaid and medicare so 1 they have more money in there pocket and 2 so the poor and elderly die thats my opion.

The Ryan budget is yet another plan to continue the transfer of wealth into the hands of the top wealthiest individuals and corporations. There was a surplus when Bush "41" came to office ..... Then a tax cut, an unfunded gift to the great pharmaceutical companies in the form of Medicare Part D and TWO WARS funded largely by borrowing. The GOP thinks everyone is as stupid and thoughtless as the "base". The GOP would like nothing more than to transfer Medicare into the hands of private insurance, Social Security to their pals on Wall Street. They would also love to take us back to where women couldn't vote and some of us were less than full human beings.
