Stringer Picks Up Gillibrand Endorsement

Calls Manhattan Borough President the "best choice" for Comptroller.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer got a big nod in the race for NYC Comptroller Monday morning, collecting the endorsement of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

The junior Senator from New York said Monday that she thought Stringer was the "best choice" in the race — over his opponent, former governor Eliot Spitzer.

"I believe Scott Stringer is clearly the best choice to serve New Yorkers as the next comptroller of the City of New York,” Gillibrand said in a statement. “Scott will fight hard for middle class families and has the temperament and judgment to be extraordinarily successful."

Stringer has collected a handful of endorsements over the last week, but this one is by far his biggest.

"Kristen has fought to bring jobs back to New York State, support transparency in government, and is leading the effort to combat sexual violence in the military," Stringer said. "She has made New York proud with her leadership in the United States Senate, and I could not be more honored to accept her endorsement.”

As some media outlets have pointed out, Gillibrand has one very big reason to support Stringer over Spitzer, beyond his qualifications. During her first election campaign for the Senate in 2010, Spitzer essentially called Gillibrand too soft for the job.
