Stavisky ran a campaign against Robert Schwartz, a conservative businessman from northern Queens.

Schwartz's campaign was not one of several to receive funding from the state and local Republican Party, making the race relatively easy to handicap from the start. Her true challenge came in the primary in September, when she faced off with two challengers for the Democratic nomination in Dist. 16.
