Quinn Criticizes Thompson's Acceptance of GOP Campaign Contributions

Bill Thompson accepts campaign contributions from former Republican senator Alfonse D'Amato

The campaign handlers for New York City Council Speaker and mayoral candidate Christine Quinn sent an e-mail to supporters on Thursday criticizing one of her opponents, Bill Thompson, for accepting campaign contributions from a former Republican senator, Alfonse D’amato, The New York Times reported.

“The last thing Democrats are looking for in a mayor of New York is someone who is ‘proud’ to have Al D’Amato’s support,” Quinn said in an email, referring to a statement Thompson made to The New York Times

Quinn has avoided campaign bickering and fights, as her handlers have worked deliberately to create an air of inevitability around her candidacy. But over the past month, Thompson has reported strong fund-raising support and picked up several key endorsements, an unsettling shift for Quinn’s camp that slowly has begun to change the race’s dynamic.

But Thompson’s aides seemed to enjoy the new attention from Quinn.

“I wonder what front-runner Christine Quinn’s internal polls say. Cause she’s attacked @BillThompsonNYC two days in a row,” his chief campaign strategist, Jonathan Prince, posted on Twitter.
