Pol Pushes to Rename Street for Geraldine Ferraro

Koslowitz wants Gardens street to honor former vice presidential candidate.

City Council Member Karen Koslowitz on Wednesday announced a plan to rename a Forest Hills street after Geraldine Ferraro, a former local congresswoman who made history as the first female and Italian-American vice presidential candidate on a major party ticket.

Koslowitz, D-Forest Hills, told  that she had recently introduced a proposal to add a plaque at Austin Street and Ascan Avenue to honor Ferraro, a Democrat who lived in Forest Hills Gardens for many years.

Ferraro, who succumbed to cancer on March 26 at age 75, represented New York's Ninth District in Congress for three terms after serving as an assistant district attorney in Queens. She is best known as Walter Mondale's running mate who unsuccessfully challenged incumbent President Ronald Reagan in 1984.

Koslowitz described Ferraro as a friend and a pioneer whose vice presidential candidacy opened the doors for many women in politics. She also mentioned that Ferraro liked to shop on Austin Street and Ascan Avenue.

This won't happen overnight, Koslowitz informed, as a bill has to pass through the City Council Parks & Recreation Committee and the full City Council before Mayor Michael Bloomberg would get the opportunity to sign the bill into law.

Nevertheless, she was optimistic about her proposal.

"I have no doubt that it's going to go all the way through," she said.
