Meng Joins Gun Task Force

After proposed legislation included in President's recommendations, Rep. joins House task force.

U.S. Rep. Grace Meng has been in Congress less than a month, and she's already making a big impression.

which had been previously introduced by former Rep. Gary Ackerman, was included in a list of gun control proposals announced by President Barack Obama on Wednesday.

Meng's legislation would close the fire sale loophole, which allows gun shop owners who lose their licenses to sell their store's inventory as part of their personal collection.

“With the horrible massacres and senseless shootings that have taken place across the country, it is essential that we act now to strengthen our nation’s gun laws so that we can prevent future tragedies from occurring,” Meng said in a statement. “It is finally time to get serious about the gun violence problem plaguing our nation. Continuing to sit idly by and do nothing is longer an option.” 

Meng also announced that she has joined the House Democratic Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, which is comprised of Democratic lawmakers committed to brainstorming legislation to reduce gun violence.

In a statement surprising to literally no one, the National Rifle Association blasted the president's proposed gun restrictions.

"Attacking firearms and ignoring children is not a solution to the crisis we face as a nation," read a statement issued by the lobbying group. "Only honest, law-abiding gun owners will be affected and our children will remain vulnerable to the inevitability of more tragedy."
