Liu Gets Nod from City's Largest Public Employee Union in Mayoral Race

District Council 37 endorses city comptroller in race for mayor.

City Comptroller John Liu picked up an endorsement this week from the city’s largest public employee union in his mayoral bid.

District Council 37, which represents 121,000 government workers and 50,000 retirees in the five boroughs, threw its weight behind Liu, who would be the first Asian American mayor of the city if elected. The union announced its endorsement on the steps of City Hall on May 29.

“DC 37 members and all New Yorkers face a critical mayoral election this November, which could bring a truly great mayor who will end the current favoritism toward the wealth 1 percent and restore government ‘for the people’ – the poor and working class people of New York City,” said Lillian Roberts, the union’s executive director. “John Liu [is] the best qualified to be that mayor.”

Liu will face off this fall against City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, former Comptroller Bill Thompson, Sal Albanese and Erik Salgado in the Democratic primary for mayor.
