Lancman Vs. Halloran: Who's Right?

It's round two in the showdown BEFORE the showdown.

When couples fight, it seems like it's always about money. Of course in this case, the couple we're talking about is a couple of guys running for Congress, so it should come as no surprise that their argument is getting a little attention.

Already, we've seen City Councilman Dan Halloran, R-Bayside, and Assemblyman Rory Lancman, D-Hillcrest,

Now, Halloran and Lancman are trading barbs over the state's Millionaire's Tax, and Assemblywoman Grace Meng is getting in on the action as well.

After Meng and Lancman argued over which candidate was responsible for creating the state's higher tax bracket for the wealthy — both voted in favor of it last year — Halloran slammed them for raising taxes.

“Assemblywoman Meng and Assemblyman Lancman want to spread the wealth around," Halloran said.  "That’s not the American way. We need to grow our economy and create jobs, not waste our time with half-brained Robin Hood schemes.”

Lancman quickly responded to the jab.

"If Dan Halloran thinks that cutting taxes for the wealthy leads to higher job creation, he must have been asleep for the entire presidency of George W. Bush," Lancman said. "Middle-class New Yorkers understand that Republicans have been systematically destroying our education, healthcare and retirement security all in the name of showering wasteful tax cuts on the rich, and Halloran's parroting of Tea Party talking points isn't going to change their mind."

So who's right? Should the state and city stay out of people's businesses (and their pockets)? Or is it the role of the government to direct money and help to the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid?
