Koslowitz Helps Homeowners Avoid Lien Sales

Outreach program helps keep local homeowners from ending up on the street.

Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz, D-Forest Hills, is spending her summer trying to help residents save their homes.

Lien sales, which occur when homeowners are so buried by water bills that the government will sell the home at auction to recoup funds, have grown in a stagnant economy.

The reality for many homeowners is that the loss is a blow to both credit and wealth that many will never recover from.

Koslowitz brought the city’s Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Finance to her office last week to help residents prevent the sale of their homes.

“I am glad that we were able to help people work out payment plans in order to avoid lien sales,” Koslowitz said. “With the August 1 deadline quickly approaching, I encourage others facing this serious problem to contact my office at 718-544-8800 for help.”
