Koslowitz Endorses Garodnick for Council Speaker

Forest Hills councilwoman backs Manhattan's Garodnick over Queens' Weprin.

Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz, D-Forest Hills, has endorsed Manhattan's Dan Garodnick's bid for City Council speaker, rather than Mark Weprin, who is the only Queens member of the legislative body vying for the position.

Other candidates for speaker include Melissa Mark-Viverito, Inez Dickens, James Vacca and Anabel Palma.

Koslowitz said she backed Garodnick because he was "progressive."

"Dan has the strongest credentials and record to be the most effective speaker to move this body forward in a progressive manner," she said.

The candidates are currently making their cases for why they should hold the position and the Council will internally vote for the new speaker on Jan. 8, Weprin recently said.
