IRS Offices Will Be Closed for Five Days This Summer Due to Furloughs

Taxpayers should file returns and pay due taxes as usual.

The Internal Revenue Service will be closed on five upcoming days to due sequester cuts, but taxpayers should continue to file returns and pay due taxes, a spokeswoman for the agency said.

Due to current national budget constraints, the IRS will not be open on May 24, June 14, July 5 or 22 and Aug. 30.

All offices, toll-free hotlines, taxpayer advocate services and assistance centers will be closed on those days. IRS employees will be furloughed without pay.

But although no tax returns will be processed, there will be no impact on the tax-filing deadline. Taxpayers should file their returns and pay any due taxes as usual, said Dianne Besunder, a spokeswoman for the IRS.

On the other hand, the IRS will give taxpayers extra time to comply with a request to provide documents, such as administrative summonses or requests for records, to the agency.
