Grodenchik Ends Borough President Bid

Queens deputy borough president drops out of the race after county organization endorses Melinda Katz.

Barry Grodenchik has dropped out of the race for Queens borough president following the county organization's decision to back former state Assemblywoman Melinda Katz.

Grodenchik, who is the Queens deputy borough president, ended his bid to replace Helen Marshall after the Queens County Democratic Party threw its weight behind Katz on Monday.

"The next borough president must focus like a laser on jobs, education, healthcare, economic development and Sandy recovery," Grodenchik said in a statement. "I am proud to have brought those issues to the forefront of the debate. But at this time, I believe it is in the best interest of my family and party to end my candidacy. "

The remaining candidates in the crowded Queens borough president race are Katz, City Council members Peter Vallone Jr. and Leroy Comrie and state Sens. Tony Avella and Jose Peralta.
