Forest Park Carousel Being Groomed for Landmark Status

Century-old carousel could finally be preserved by LPC.

The Forest Park Carousel, the century-old piece of New York history that only recently got back on its feet, could be looking at a lifetime of preservation.

The carousel was the subject of a research hearing by the New York City Landmark's Preservation Commission Tuesday morning, the first step in cementing landmark status.

It's been a long ride for the carousel, which was relaunched last summer with a new operator after long being dormant and unused in Forest Park.

City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley said she was excited by the possibility of a landmarking.

"Preserving our history strengthens and enriches the character of our communities," said Crowley. “The significance of the Muller horses, which were carved more than 100 years ago is without question, and the carousel has been a centerpiece of Forest Park for 40 years. I strongly believe that landmarking the carousel will increase visitors and ensure it remains preserved and operational for future generations.”
