Family Talk: Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner

Scandal in marriage is not a new concept, nor is it solely confined to those in the public eye.

Like those of celebrities and politicians, one’s marriage can be filled with some of the same transgressions we hear about in the news, read about in the papers and online and see on TV.

What is unfortunate for those in the public eye is that when such wrongdoings are committed and exposed, they become fodder for the media - and usually with little regard for the marriage in question or injured party involved.

The recent revelations surrounding Anthony Weiner and his Carlos Danger antics shed light not only on the mayoral candidate’s character, but on his marriage as well.

The Daily News posted an article featuring Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin. “Anthnoy Weiner sex scandal: Huma Abedin through the years” is a series of photos of Abedin with her husband.

Seemingly forever by his side, Abedin is pictured with her husband throughout their three-year marriage in good and bad times.

Abedin, who served as a top aide to Hillary Clinton, is also pictured with President Barack Obama and Clinton on separate occasions.

The New York Post’s Thursday cover of Abedin does not depict her in the same intelligent and professional woman kind of light with the caption “Senora Danger . . . What’s Wrong With You?” as highlighted by the Huffington Post.

With Weiner’s actions and public status, the couple, or Abedin to put it more accurately, is forced to endure the current tribulations of her marriage with the media’s and public’s opinions and criticisms not just of her marriage, but of her husband’s actions and, more importantly, her reaction to all that has passed.

Making a decision to stay within a marriage that has such complications, to put it mildly, is no easy fete. Doing so under the lens of the media must be nearly insurmountable as I can only imagine.

Whatever Abedin’s resolution to her husband’s violations of their vows and marital bond, one can only hope that Weiner begins to think about the repercussions of his actions as a husband and public figure before giving into his temptations.

As for Abedin’s decision to work on her marriage and stand by her husband, as anyone who is married knows, no one person can tell another what they should do with their marriage.

Only those within the marriage can make the final determination for what is best for everyone involved.

We can all sit and judge, or praise, Abedin for her decision to stay, but at the end of the day, she is the only one that knows what is right for her and her family.
