Endorsement Round-Up: Teamsters Everywhere!

Check out who's handing out support this week.

Let’s take a look at some more endorsements this week, as we merrily roll along towards the state’s Democratic and Republican primaries in June.

U.S. Rep. Bob Turner — Senate

Turner picked up the endorsement of New York City’s Republican City Council delegation on Monday, locking down a group of people who helped him campaign for the office her currently holds.

The council’s Republican delegation has four members.

“Bob is the symbolic fed-up American who cannot not sit on the sidelines while our country's future is being walked off a cliff,” said James Oddo. “He showed up on the scene with zero political experience, challenged President Obama's failing policies in an overwhelmingly Democratic district, and won. It was a remarkable feat and he can do it again."

Assemblyman Rory Lancman — NY-6

Lancman picked up three separate Teamsters Unions in endorsements last week, including UPS workers, transportation workers, auto mechanics and more. The groups giving him the nod were Teamsters Local 804, 808 and 917.

“I’m so proud to have workers who keep New York moving on my side in this race,” Lancman said. “Together, we can make sure that Congress delivers for New Yorkers who work for a living, and for their priorities: a good job with a fair wage, reliable benefits, a college education without crushing debt and a secure retirement with dignity.”

Lancman earned the support of the New York chapter of the Organization of Staff Analysts last week, as well.

City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley — NY-6

The District 15 Machinists Union endorsed Crowley in a release this week. Crowley thanked the group for their hard work and support.

“I want to thank the Machinists for their support. Throughout the Machinists’ history, they have fought to improve the lives of working and middle class families,” Crowley said. “In Washington, I will continue to advocate for the Machinists’ values where all Americans are rewarded for hard work and are provided the opportunities to achieve the American Dream.”

Crowley also earned her fair share of Teamster support recently. She collected Teamsters Local 210 and 553, representing home heating oil, air conditioning repair and JFK fueling workers.

Assemblywoman Grace Meng — NY-6

Meng grabbed the Teamsters Local 812 Union last week, which includes soft drink and brewery workers across the city.

She held a press event at the Coca-Cola Bottling company in Maspeth.

Fair usage of public roads is fine, the main issue at hand is that the design of the new bike linesRead More on Jewel Ave is just poor and unsafe for all parties involved. On the eastbound Jewel Ave road heading towards Main St, the bike like is just haphazardly running along next to the merge lane to the GCP westbound lane, meaning vehicle traffic cuts directly across the new bike lane when getting onto a highway. This is very dangerous since because there are only 2 lanes now on the eastbound Jewel road the right lane becomes the de-facto bus lane for the Q65. That bus moves pretty quick in general. Any driver attempting to make the merge onto the GCP west with a bike rider directly in the merge/bike lane combined with a fast, slow to brake bus behind them will be hard pressed to slow down in time and not cause some kind of accident. Why would anybody design that kind of traffic pattern, it's dangerous and reckless. It's not much better going on the Westbound Jewel Ave Road since that bike lane also merges with the GCP exit ramp with cars exiting from highway speed. It is not a safe traffic pattern at all for anyone. Aside from that, the westbound bike lane just sort ends abruptly there as well, leaving bicyclists basically at the end of an off-ramp without a clear traffic lane. They really should have thought out the placement and layout before somebody gets hurt, especially as the weather becomes better and we see more mixed usage on the road.

Mary, I follow the rules of the road. If I wear a helmet will you and other drivers stop speedingRead More and running red lights? An average of 17 cyclists are killed every year by drivers. not once has a driver been injured when hitting a cyclist. Do you really think we're not paying attention? You're using your car to get somewhere. That's fine. I'm using a bike to get somewhere. Please respect my right to use the road.

No not thinly veiled attempts. Real attempts. When bikers start adhering to the rules of the road,Read More wearing helmets and paying attention they'll be taken seriously. Until then ... got to the park!
