Council Passes Muni-Meter Transfer Bill

New rules will allow commuters to get what they pay for at parking meters.

The New York City Council voted on Tuesday to give the beleaguered drivers of the five boroughs a break — for once.

In a unanimous vote, 48-0, the city council agreed to new rules that allow commuters to transfer time purchased at one muni-meter to a new location.

City Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz, D-Forest Hills, said drivers are already paying through the nose to commute in the city, and shouldn't be punished by having to overpay at the parking meter.

“In a time when it’s getting more and more expensive to live in New York City, including with the recent rise in muni meters fares last year, I am proud to be a strong supporter of this bill which will allow the transferability of unused muni-meter time at another location and provide much needed common sense relief to drivers throughout New York City,“ Koslowitz said.

City Councilman Dan Halloran, R-Bayside, who is also running for Congress in Forest Hills, said the idea was so simple it should have been done a long time ago.

"It's a simple concept," he said, "You ought to get what you pay for. Drivers in this city have been taxed and tolled enough. This legislation makes good sense and will help drivers save a bit more of their hard-earned money."
