Comrie Could Get Dem Nod for Queens BP: Report

Southeast Queens Councilman has nearly secured Queens party backing, Politicker reports.

City Councilman Leroy Comrie — whose fundraising operation could only be classified as woeful — is about to get the nod as the Democratic candidate for Queens Borough President, according to Politicker.

It would be the second time in two years that the Queens Democratic Party — headquartered in Forest Hills — has made a decision likely to cause a rift.

When county chair Joe Crowley selected then-Assemblywoman Grace Meng to run for Congress over Rory Lancman, the end result was a hotly-contested primary.

Things could get even uglier this time around, Politicker reported, as several of the candidates already running for the Queens Borough President's office have put in months of fundraising and are far outraising Comrie.

The southeast Queens city councilman is one of a handful of candidates vying for the position. The current money leader is City Councilman Peter Vallone, who has more than $800,000 in cash on hand, twenty times as much as Comrie's $40,000 total.

Comrie is also running against Melinda Katz, Tony Avella and Jose Peralta, all of whom have more money in the bank. Katz even managed to secure the backing of former U.S. Rep. Floyd Flake, a prominent southeast Queens clergyman and community leader, which was seen as a blow to Comrie at the time.

While getting tabbed by the county party is no guarantee of victory for a candidate, Queens tends to be a machine-centric borough, and putting that muscle behind Comrie could certainly overcome his lack of funding.

Do you think Comrie would be a good choice to replace Helen Marshall as borough president? Let us know in the comments.
