City to Crack Down on Dangerous Delivery Bikers

New rules will mandate safety courses and gear for commercial bicyclists, with the DOT taking over the job of enforcement.

City Council approved a plan Thursday that would require bicycle delivery workers to take a required safety course, paid for by their employer, according to NY1.

A second bill calls for penalties for businesses that do not provide safety gear for their delivery people, such as helmets and reflectors. Also, the New York City Department of Transportation will now have enforcement power over commercial bicyclists – previously the job of the NYPD.

For now, the Department of Transportation has only six people to enforcing the new rules. However, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn told the news channel that the goal is to increase those numbers in the next few months.

"We want the days of the Wild Wild West to come to an end," City Councilman James Vacca, D-Bronx, told NY1. "We've had too many instances where people on commercial bikes have really posed a danger."

A New York State Restaurant Association spokesman told the Associated Press that safety courses could be helpful, but adds that some of the other measures are more likely to burden businesses.

What about some rules and enforcement of rules regarding delivery bikers and other bikers riding on the sidewalk? Pedestrians are at risk. Bicycle riding on sidewalks is becoming more prevalent in Fores Hills.

I am with Ali ALSO... can we please crackdown on car drivers down Austin Street NEAR THE PLAYGROUND? You want increased revenue? Get an police presence between 77th and 73rd. Speeding and disregard for stop signs.

Wild wild west??? We are talking about delivery boys riding bicycles people...Let's save our money and time and concentrate on more important things. These guys are just trying to make a living, they are minimum wage employees working on tips. The last thing they should be worrying about is getting tickets and working to pay the government.

Instead of looking at the pedal bikes, how about looking at the totally illegal electric bikes that are all over Forest Hills? These guys are constantly going the wrong way on one way streets, jumping off sidewalks between cars, etc. At least the pedal bicycles are legal! The electric bikes are not! The DMV has totally outlawed them yet there is absolutely no enforcement. If I get hit by one of them I'm gonna own whatever restaurant they come from.

I'm with you, Russo. Most of the regular bikes are fine. if they kill someone, most likely it's going to be themselves. But the electric bikes are silent and much faster. if they'd obey the law I wouldn't have a problem but it seems they're always going the wrong way on one-way streets.
