The first snowstorm of 2012 hit the city overnight Saturday, covering the five boroughs in a blanket of white and dropping the first flakes seen in the area
The National Weather Service indicated that there could be accumulation of up to five total inches by midday on Saturday.
“Whatever does get on the ground should disappear within a day or so,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, at a press conference at which he also revealed his bet with the Mayor of San Francisco on the . “The plows aren’t really doing very much, it’s the salt-spreaders that are the most effective tool. You really have to have a number of inches of snow before a plow can get down the street and make a difference.”
Temperatures are likely to stay in the low 20’s all day with up to 15 mile-per-hour winds overnight.
