CB 6 Votes on DOT Plan to Remove Metropolitan Avenue Parking Spaces

Board unanimously approves suggestion to add green arrow and left-hand turn signal.

Community Board 6 voted Wednesday on a proposal by the city's Department of Transportation to remove parking spaces on Metropolitan Avenue as a safety measure.

The DOT wants to remove 14 spaces along the commercial strip near 71st Avenue in an effort to cut down on traffic accidents.

Additionally, the agency called for adding a left-hand turn signal at the intersection and moving a nearby bus stop down the road.

"We are very concerned about the loss of meter parking for the businesses there," said Joseph Hennessy, the board's chairman. "Our recommendation is that we'd like a green arrow with a left-hand turn lane. That way, traffic is controlled and no pedestrians are crossing. The DOT wasn't too receptive to it."

The board voted unanimously to approve its recommendation for a green arrow and left-hand turn signal.
