After Israel Visit, Turner Fears A Nuclear Iran

Congressman urges president to prevent nuclear-armed Iran at any cost.

Back stateside after a recent trip to Israel, Congressman Bob Turner, R-Forest Hills, once again has some tough talk for Iran, and President Barack Obama to boot.

“During my trip I got a vivid reminder of just how dangerous it is for the people of Israel right now,” Turner said during an appearance in Brooklyn Tuesday. “Iran’s past involvement with attacks against the United States and our allies, along with their recent public threats, prove them to be a real danger to our safety and security.”

Turner has, in his short tenure in office, traveled to both Afghanistan and Israel and made some broad pronouncements in favor of taking a hard line against the possibility of Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon.

On Tuesday, he was no less stern.

“The thought of Iran developing the means to build just one bomb, much less the ability to manufacture them at will, is not something we can allow to happen,” he said.

urging Obama not to take any option off the table to prevent a nuclear-armed Iranian state.

“President Obama cannot allow there to be any doubt about our support for Israel or his resolve to protect the American people,” he said. “Not only should the President leave every option on the table, but he should also use the powers which Congress has given him to fully implement sanctions against the Central Bank of Iran and also work with the Senate to pass the Iran Threat Reduction Act.”

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have been on the rise lately, punctuated by the Iranian threat this month to blockade the Strait of Hormuz with its navy. The strait is a virtual oil highway for the rest of the world.

Turner, who sits on the House Committee on Homeland Security, was joined by Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind.

“It has come to the point where we can no longer rule out the very real possibility of taking military action against Iran,” Hikind said.
