Recent Spike In Burglaries Drives Up Local Crime Numbers

Grand larceny, reported rapes also increase in most recent crime statistics.

Crime in the is continuing its slow upward trend this week, with an increase in burglaries and robberies over the same period last year.

While Forest Hills and Rego Park still enjoy their status as two of the lowest-crime neighborhoods in the borough, crime numbers — in particular robberies and burglaries, are ticking upwards, according to the most recent COMPSTAT release.

Some of the most eye-opening increases are those in grand larceny and burglary.

Through mid-May of last year, there had been 43 reported burglaries in the 112 Precinct, compared to 52 through the same date this year.

Grand larcenies have also increased significantly, 159 reported this year, compared to 138 on the books at the same time in 2010.

Robberies, while down overall for the year, have seen a spike in recent days, with five reported between May 9 and May 15.

The number of reported rapes in the borough through the first five months of the year also draw the eye. Through May 15 of 2010, only one rape was reported in the 112 Precinct, compared with five in the same period of time this year.

Not all news is bad, however.

A series of department policies put in place — including offering Vehicle Identification Number etching and more — has contributed to a precipitous decline in the number of auto thefts in the area.

While there were 44 auto thefts in the area by May 15 of last year, there have only been 28 reported so far this year, a steep decrease.

There have been no reported homicides in the 112 Precinct, and the number of felonious assaults have gone from 19 in 2010 to 13 in 2011.
