Precinct Fights Big Jump in Grand Larcenies

Stats tick up in one major category last month.

After a week in which only 11 major crimes were reported, the 112 Precinct saw a huge uptick in grand larcenies, with 16 committed in the most recent available seven-day period.

Grand larcenies have been a bur under the saddle of police in the precinct all year, and the most recent numbers have been no different. There were 16 total grand larcenies between April 16 and April 22, compared to just eight in the same period in 2011. The number drove up the total to 34 in the last month, a nearly 10 percent increase over the same period last year.

For the year, the total has remained static, however.

The precinct also recorded three stolen cars in the same period, another jump over the same time frame last year, but only by two.

All told, crime has remained nearly static or gone slightly down in almost every category in the precinct this year, with the exception of felony assaults. The jump in assaults is accounted for by a recent change in the state’s assault statute.
