Local Cops Still Fighting Assault Increase

Felony assaults sit at four times last years total in recent numbers.

A troubling trend has settled in over the first two months of the year in the 112 Precinct: a consistent rise in felony assaults, while grand larceny has maintain its peak from last year.

Already this year in the , there have been 16 felony assaults, four times the number that occurred through the first two months of 2011. In addition to those 16, there have been 25 misdemeanor assaults, a more than 30 percent increase over the previous year.

Burglaries have flared up as in issue in the most recent week, with four incidents reported, in the last week of February, compared with just one in the same week during 2011. Overall this year, burglaries are down over 20 percent.

Grand larcenies, which include purse-snatchings and wallet thefts, have seen their numbers stay more or less the same, week-to-week. There have been just two more incidents this year over last year, though in the last month the number has jumped, with 38 occurring in the last 28 days, compared to 30 in the same month in 2011.

The number of high profile crimes in the area has been an issue as well,, and Street doctor’s office making headlines in the last ten days.
