Forest Hills Saw Crime Increase in 2012: Report

New York Daily News reveals that last year's decrease was due to classification errors.

Residents suspicious of last year's crime numbers in Forest Hills and Rego Park have been vindicated, if a recent report in the New York Daily News is accurate.

The paper reported on Tuesday that because of miscategorized crimes, last year's four percent dip in total major crimes should have been a one percent increase.

Roughly 40 felony crime reports were categorized at misdemeanors in 2012 COMPSTAT reports, including many grand larceny incidents that were listed as petit larcenies, the paper wrote.

In the 2012 year-end COMPSTAT report, there were a total of 475 grand larcenies reported, compared to 494 in 2011, a nearly four percent decrease.

There were 887 total major crimes reported in the final yearly COMPSTAT, compared to 926 the year before.

Late in the year, Precinct Commander Christopher Tamola was promoted and replaced by Thomas Conforti, who reportedly reviewed the reports himself.

Precinct Council President Heidi Chain declined to comment on the story.
