Crime Sees Double-Digit Increases In Most Recent Numbers

Robberies, grand larcenies posing big problem for local police.

called the the safest precinct in the safest borough in the city, but that glowing endorsement doesn’t prevent spikes in crime from occasionally bubbling up.

Currently, the 112 Precinct is seeing an increase in several different crime categories, including robberies, grand larcenies and rape.

Over the last 28 days, crime in the 112 Precinct has gone up in every category with the exception of homicides (there have been none in the precinct so far this year), burglaries and misdemeanor assaults.

Every other crime category has seen percentage increases in the double digits.

The most notable increase by far has been seen in the robbery category. In the last seven days, 17 robberies have been reported in the 112 Precinct, compared to just five in the same 28 day period in 2010.

There have also been 20 more grand larcenies — 39 this year compared to 19 in the same period last year — and three more incidents of felonious assault.

Police at the most recent community council meeting chalked up some — but not all — of the increase to youth-on-youth crime in the area, including cell phone thefts.

Police also touted a recent program that brought a large number of officers from other precincts to grand larceny trouble spots — like — to help bring the rising larceny numbers back down to earth.

There was one reported rape incident in the last 28 days, which contributed to the six total this year, a big increase over the one incident reported in the first five-and-a-half months of 2010.

While the Precinct Community Council in the 112 has adjourned its meetings for the summer, the annual Night Out Against Crime in will take place again this year in early August.
