Crime Numbers Hold Steady In 112

Burglaries see increase over last year, but holiday season quiet so far.

Burglaries saw a big jump earlier this month over their numbers last year, while crime in every other category seems to have taken a nose dive as the cold winter months have settled in over Forest Hills.

According to the most recent crime numbers available in the , there were four burglaries in the area between Dec. 6 and Dec. 12, compared to none during the same week in 2009.

There were fewer reported robberies and incidents of grand larceny compared to last year, as well.

Crime on the whole has been down. While the burglaries increased over the same period last year, over the last 28 days there have been 11 less than in 2009.

Only assaults and auto thefts have gone up in the four-week comparisons, with two more assaults and one more auto theft occurring than they did over the same period last year.

The precinct is on the verge of seeing auto theft number 100, assuming the numbers don't slow to a crawl for the last  two weeks of the year. So far that would indicate a more than ten percent increase in the number of auto thefts, year over year.

The 112 is also on pace to deal with one less homicide this year than last, assuming the classification of the Haroon Walfall beating incident last month remains the same. Police said they are investigating it as an assault and not a homicide because the medical examiner's early examination indicated that Walfall should not have died of his injuries.

Taken as an aggregate, reported crime in the area is down eight percent over all so far this year.
